Surname Saturday - Dutch surname equivalents abroad
Ten days ago I started the publication of a list of Dutch surnames and their equivalents abroad, without mentioning that it is a Surname Saturday subject. This post sets the record straight. You'll find the list with surnames here.

Dutch surname equivalents abroad

Elaborating on my earlier blog on Dutch ancestors I think it may be useful to put together a list of Dutch surnames and their foreign “equivalents”. With “equivalents” I mean that names have been adapted to local circumstances being a different language or a different pronunciation. Sometimes the sound of a foreign name has an undesired meaning in the new language and has therefore been changed. Many a time the old and the new surname can be easily connected to each other but that is not always the case.
Also note that a deviating spelling in one country/region may be quite different in another country/region. If known I will add the name of the country/region where the deviation is detected.
Often Dutch surnames are preceded by prefixes which are not a part of the “real” name. Example: ‘van Oeveren’ (two words) in the Netherlands has become ‘VanOeveren’ in the States. No big deal but non-Dutch people will be inclined to look for their name in Dutch archives under the letter ‘V’ and not find anything because the name has been archived under the ´O´. (The word ‘van’ often means ‘from’.) In a number of cases the Dutch prefix has disappeared altogether.
It is also good to know that deviating ways of spelling a name are not always very significant. In particular before 1812 the same person’s name may be written in x different ways. But also after 1812, when the registration of births, marriages and deaths was transferred from the church to civil authorities, deviations are widely spread.
This may not be the proper place to say this but I’ll do it anyway. People should be cautious to draw conclusions based on the (presumed) meaning of a particular surname in Holland. E.g. if your surname is Casteel and you find out that it goes back to the Dutch name Kasteel meaning castle, it is highly unlikely that your ancestors in the Netherlands ever owned a castle. That may be disappointing but such is the truth sometimes. Please note the example used is entirely fabricated.

Instead of a single list, it may be clearer to create two lists containing the same data but in a different order. One showing today’s Dutch names in alphabetical order and a similar list showing the foreign equivalents. The list now contains 337 equivalents.
Hopefully the two lists below will grow enabling genealogists abroad to successfully search Dutch archives. It should also help Dutch investigators to identify their possible relatives abroad.
I like to invite readers to submit relevant examples to be incorporated in this list. In the meantime I thank the people who supplied me with a number of surnames already. My special thanks go to Yvette Hoitink (@yhoitink). She gave me permission to copy a large number of names from her website Dutch Genealogy.
