Mourning Google Reader but what now?

With the announced suicide (thank you Amy Coffin!) of Google Reader this company created a problem for many of us. The reasoning behind this decision is totally unclear to me. (Less users? How many users today? Did Google do anything to revive it?) Their action also makes me suspicious about what they might have in stock for us... In any case next Monday Reader is dead, RIP.

Before I tell you that I have chosen Feedly as my next RSS tool, I have to tell you that I generally find RSS tools difficult to handle. The actions I take within any given reader often result in unpredictable results. Maybe that is because I don't take the trouble of reading their instructions. But I hold the firm view that we should be able to comprehend potentially simple tools without reading lengthy instructions. I've never seen one with a Quick Start chapter.
No matter what I have chosen Feedly. Not because its workings are 100% clear to me but mainly because it is relatively simple to handle and it looks good. On the left you see the (my) task bar. No further explanation needed I think. The only question I have here concerns the two folders named Feedly.Others and Uncategorized. First, I did not create these folders with those names. I just created a single folder named Others. Second, the content of each folder is a mirror of the other. Third, under Organize I can't change these folder names. Fourth, if I delete subscriptions in one, they are also deleted in the other. Fifth, under Organize both folders have the same name: Others. 
Well, beats me but maybe one day I will understand. Or can you help me out?

In the task bar you can see I am displaying all Today's new feeds. There are several ways to display these. The one below resembles one of the dynamic views in Blogger (see below).

I have to get used to Feedly but eventually I will! However, I still have a question. I can now subscribe to other people's blogs and sites. But how can people subscribe to my blogs?

I know there is the RSS Subscription Extension. But that also is a Google product. Will that remain available? I have asked the Feedly people whether there is a possibility to show Feedly in my blogs enabling people to subscribe. Sofar no reaction.
In any case if you are still undecided what to do, do one thing today! Go to your Google Reader and make a download of all your subscriptions. Google shows you how that can be done. Thank you, Google...

Summary holidays -2013- samenvatting vakantie

De zomer van het jaar 2013 zal v.w.b. Europa wel de boeken in gaan als een onstabiele en natte zomer. Bij terugkomst ontmoetten we dan ook veelal meewarige blikken, zo van: zeker niet zulk best weer gehad? Daarom is het goed dat we dat bijhouden! Van de 22 dagen dat we weg geweest zijn, waren er 7 niet om naar huis te schrijven (doen we trouwens toch weinig) en 15 "zondagen" die variëerden van 19-30 graden. En inderdaad, dat hebben we wel eens beter gehad maar al met al, zeker niet slecht.
Gelijk vorig jaar, ook dit jaar op 28 mei vertrokken en in de 21 dagen daarna de volgende route afgelegd (met de overnachtingen in het blauw):
Castricum - Maastricht - Noorbeek - Luik - Luxemburg - Thionville - Metz - Nancy - St. Dié - Tunnel Maurice Lemaire - Colmar -Vesoul - Besançon - Lons-le-Saunier - Orgelet - Oyonnax - Annecy - Bredannaz (3) - Albertville - Grenoble - Valence - Nyons (2) - Nímes - Montpelier - Lodéve - Albi - Toulouse - Fleurance (2) - Mont de Marsan - Dax - Vieux Boucau-les-Bains (8) - Bordeaux - Tours - Le Mans - Alençon - Rouen - De Panne - Gent - Zelzate - Liefkenshoektunnel - Rotterdam - Uitgeest - Castricum.
Uit en thuis was dat een ritje van 3785 km. Dat kostte 340 liter euro95 zodat we uitkwamen op een verbruik van 1:11,1. Gemiddeld kostte een litertje dit jaar € 1,55. En dat was weer zo goed als gelijk aan de prijs die we vorig jaar betaalden. Overigens moet je om dat gemiddelde te halen wel veel bij Leclerc c.s. tanken.
Vorig jaar overnachtten we in 16 verschillende plaatsen. Dit jaar hebben we wat minder koffers in- en uitgepakt, slechts 10x. Daardoor ontstond er wat meer rust tijdens onze trektocht. Het aantal overnachtingen in één bepaalde plaats staat in de route (tussen haakjes) vermeld.
In praktisch alle streken waren we al eens eerder. Alleen de omgeving van Annecy en het bijbehorende "Meer van" waren niet alleen echt nieuw maar ook zeer de moeite waard.
De kosten van logies, eten en drinken, zijn n.o.m. in Frankrijk nog steeds betaalbaar. We gaven daarvoor net zoveel uit als vorig jaar n.l. € 74 p.p.p.d. Over het algemeen slapen we in twee-sterren-hotels die overigens onderling zeer verschillen. Een ligbad is toch wat anders dan een douchecabine van 60x60 cm. En, ook niet onbelangrijk, dit jaar slechts één maal een hotel getroffen dat al vol was (wij reserveren nooit).
Al met al een aangename vakantie gehad die ons mogelijk voor de laatste keer via Fleurance heeft gevoerd omdat het huis van onze vrienden daar te koop staat. Het is maar dat je het weet.

Our holiday travel started in the north east.

People in western Europe will generally agree that the summer of 2013 is not on the top of their list. Unstable, heavy rains and lots of wind will probably be their keywords. Still, our holidays this year lasted for 22 days. And out of those 22 15 have been downright sunny with temperatures between 19 and 30 degrees Centigrade. The other 7 were, what shall I say, humid :-( But all in all it certainly wasn't bad.
The red line on the map shows the route we followed. For those interested in geography our car drove us via
Castricum - Maastricht - Noorbeek - Luik - Luxemburg - Thionville - Metz - Nancy - St. Dié - Tunnel Maurice Lemaire - Colmar -Vesoul - Besançon - Lons-le-Saunier - Orgelet - Oyonnax - Annecy - Bredannaz (3) - Albertville - Grenoble - Valence - Nyons (2) - Nímes - Montpelier - Lodéve - Albi - Toulouse - Fleurance (2) - Mont de Marsan - Dax - Vieux Boucau-les-Bains (8) - Bordeaux - Tours - Le Mans - Alençon - Rouen - De Panne - Gent - Zelzate - Liefkenshoektunnel - Rotterdam - Uitgeest - Castricum.
We stayed overnight in the cities in blue. In a number of places we stayed (more than 1) night.
The total distance covered was 3,785 kilometers which is average for our summer holidays. Compared to last year fuel consumption (euro95) was about the same: 11.1 km/litre or 31.4 miles/UK gallon or 26.1 miles/US gallon. To cover the a.m. distance our car consumed some 340 liters at an average cost of € 1.55/liter or € 7.046 /UK gallon or € 5.875/US gallon.
By staying longer in certain cities we managed to limit the number of times we had to pack and unpack to 10. Last year this number stood at 16. But we both agree the smaller number results in a more relaxing trip.
In our view the cost of hotels and food in France is still affordable. We spent an average of € 81 pppd. Usually we stay at two star hotels. But also within that category their are vast differences. Just compare a spacious tub to a 60x60 centimeters shower cabin when you try to pick up the bar of soap you dropped.
We hardly ever make hotel reservations because only very rarely we find that hotels are fully booked. Just one this year so that is not too bad.
The Annecy region was new to us. With all the mountains around the Lake of Annecy the scenery is very attractive and certainly worth a visit. All other regions we visited this year were known to us before. It is with some regret that our visit to Fleurance was probably the last visit there. Our friends are selling their beautiful house in the Gers. So if you are interested...
In any case we'll remember these holidays as being very pleasant. All we have to do now is to have the pictures developed and put them in this years album. I like to thank all readers of our holiday blogs for visiting! Please come in again.

De Panne - Castricum

Nothing much worth mentioning happened during the last stretch of our home bound trip. We had a very nice breakfast and from our room I made this picture of the coast line tram. If ever you want to get a good impression of the Belgian coast I can recommend this tram. It runs from De Panne (on the French border) all  the way to Knokke (on the Dutch border). Although we visited practically all of the sea side resorts there, we never traveled by tram but it certainly is a very relaxed way to do it.
Our route brought us to Gent and Zelzate. Going via Antwerp is no longer necessary. The better option is to take the Liefkenshoek tunnel. For a mere € 6.00 you save a lot of time and also the hassle of going through the Kennedy tunnel on the far side of Antwerp. The traffic situation in both Belgium and Holland allowed us to be back home by 1 pm. And that was the end of a very nice three week holiday.
Like I did last year I'll make a summary of this holiday as well. The previous one is in Dutch but the 2013 version will be available in English as well.

Van het laatste deel van onze thuisreis valt niet zo veel te vertellen. Vanuit onze kamer heb ik bijgaande foto gemaakt waarop de tram die van De Panne helemaal naar Knokke rijdt. Hoewel wij de meeste kustplaatsen wel met de auto bezocht hebben, lijkt het mij met deze tram ook wel erg ontspannen. Misschien toch nog maar eens doen.
De terugweg voert via Gent en Zelzate. Vervolgens via de Liefkenshoektunnel (€ 6,00) onder de Schelde door. Via die route laat je Antwerpen en de drukke Kennedytunnel rechts liggen en dat scheelt een hoop tijd en vaak ook files. Al met al was het verkeer deze keer geen probleem en om een uur of één arriveerden we weer in een warm Castricum.
Terugkijkend is het weer ons toch nog alleszins meegevallen, tijdens die drie weken. Zoals ik ook vorig jaar gedaan heb, zal ik ook dit jaar een samenvatting van deze vakantie maken. Jullie zien 'm wel verschijnen.

Le Mans - De Panne

When we left Le Mans this morning it was raining cats and dogs. And that is an understatement. At a certain moment I thought the front window was hit by the footpath variety of gravel. But it was hail the size of pigeon eggs! After a short stop we continued our journey in the direction of Alencon and onwards. The weather remained bad for some time. Just ahead of us on the A28 a truck driver lost control and his trailer ended up on its side. It seemed he got out all right.
Around 3 pm we arrived in the Belgian coastal village of De Panne (or La Panne as the French call it). The weather conditions there were a lot better. We had a drink on a beach terrace and a fantastic meal in the downtown area. Our usual hotel seemed to be closed so we had to look for a new one. The one we found offered excellent service including a very nice breakfast for a competitive price.
Tomorrow we'll do the home bound leg.

In Le Mans werden we al vroeg wakker door een hevig onweer. Omdat het hotel al vanaf 7 uur ontbijt serveerde, hebben we dus maar van die gelegenheid gebruik gemaakt en zaten we om kwaart over acht al in de auto. Onderweg een hevige hagelbui met stenen ter grootte van de spreekwoordelijke duiveneieren. Ik moet nog even controleren of het autodak er zonder schade vanaf gekomen is. Voorbij Alencon, op de A28, was een chauffeur de macht over het stuur en zijn trailer verloren. Ondanks de door het ongeluk veroorzaakte grote ravage, konden we er zonder al te veel problemen langs.
's Middags om een uur of drie arriveerden we in De Panne. Het betere weer daar stelde ons in staat om op een terrasje op het strand van een consumptie te genieten. En daarna, in een achteraf restaurantje, van een prima diner. Daar waren we vorig jaar verzeild geraakt tijdens een enorme regenbui. En omdat we toen maar moeilijk weg konden komen, zijn we er blijven eten. Echt Belgisch lekker!
Onze "vaste" hotel was om wat duistere redenen gesloten. Daarom met succes een ander gezocht en gevonden. Daar gaan we volgend jaar zeker weer naar toe, mocht de reis ons ook dan weer via De Panne  voeren.
Morgen de laatste etappe naar huis.

Vieux Boucau - Le Mans

Just a short post to let you know where we are. We stayed in Vieux Boucau until this Sunday morning. Reason? Mainly because of the very agreeable weather. We spent a few mornings on the beach and watched the surfers doing their tricks. The prevailing winds came from the East. In Holland this usually means that the sea is full of jellyfish. VB is no different as you can see on the second picture.
We stayed in VB a few days longer than planned. So when we left this morning it was with the definite idea to add a few miles on the clock. We drove via Bordeaux en Tours, taking the autoroute. Those routes are not my favorite roads but if you are in a hurry...
Around 4 pm we found a hotel in Le Mans, about 600 kilometers North of VB. We found out we were lucky to get this room because a week from today the famous Le Mans 24 hours race takes place. And the crews are coming in already...

We had a very nice diner in an unsightly restaurant in downtown Le Mans. The choice for this place was not too difficult because it seems it was the only restaurant in all of Le Mans that wasn't closed this Sunday night.
Tomorrow we plan to make our last stop somewhere on the Belgian coast. Hopefully my phone will then again connect to the internet so that I can show you a picture of the beautiful Le Mans cathedral.

Nederlandse tekst
Dit wordt een kort blogje. Het weer in Vieux Boucau was zo aangenaam dat we maar een paar dagen langer zijn gebleven. 's Morgens lekker over het strand zwalken en zelfs de vlieger nog een keertje opgelaten die we ooit op festival du cerf in Normandië gekocht hebben. En 's middags soms een siësta. In het weekend zijn hier veel Spanjaarden, vandaar :-)
De twee foto's spreken voor zich, hoewel... De tweede foto laat de vele kwalletjes zien op het strand van VB. Het was oostenwind en, net zoals in Holland stikt de zee hier dan van de (kleine) kwallen.
Maar hedenmorgen zijn we dan weer op weg gegaan, via de autoroute. Die behoren niet tot mijn favoriete wegen maar als je km's wilt maken zijn ze prima. Via Bordeaux en Tours zijn we uiteindelijk in het 600 km noordelijker gelegen Le Mans uitgekomen. 
Volgende week vindt daar de befaamde 24-uurs race weer plaats dus we boften dat we nog een hotelkamer hebben kunnen vinden.

Mijn telefoon wil niet erg contact met internet maken. Dus dan morgen maar een foto van de schitterende kathedraal van Le Mans. Dan hebben we de rit naar de Belgische kust waarschijnlijk al weer achter de rug.

Vieux Boucau-les-Bains

Today is not the day to write long blogs. The weather is as predicted: les Bains weather. So I'll just show you a few pictures I took on the beach this morning. On the horizon of the first one (click to enlarge) you can see the mountains on the coast of northern Spain. As the crow flies that is about 80 kilometers from here.
Compared to yesterday the waves were a little stronger this morning. Apparently there was also a strong current as three people had to be saved! All three had to be carried to hospital.

I am sure the beaches in Holland are no different but each and every time we are here we are amazed by all the rubbish that is washed ashore. In particular all these plastic nets and lines. I assume it is all thrown overboard. A big thank you to all the shipping lines seems to be in place.. There should be an OEA, an Ocean Environmental Authority!
The last one gives a nice overview of the beach. It is taken from the place where we had lunch. By that time the temperature must have been close to 30 degrees Centigrade. Which is an as good excuse as any to have a pichet of rosé.

Vieux Boucau

Gistermiddag kondigde het zich reeds aan en vanmorgen was het er nog steeds: de weersverbetering. Hoewel we van plan waren vandaag weer verder te trekken, vond ook onze hotelgastheer het een goed idee dat we er nog een dag aan vastplakten. En als het weer wat standvastig is dan volgen er misschien nog wel een paar van die goede ideeën.
Vieux Boucau heeft een fraai kerkje, Saint Clément genaamd. Het heeft onverwacht mooie plafondschilderingen, zie de afbeelding hiernaast.
Vanmorgen ook de wekelijkse markt bezocht, één van Jeanne's verplichte activiteiten. Het is een gewone markt maar met toch wel een paar op toeristen toegesneden stalletjes. Omdat het hele centrum van VB op de schop is gegaan, heeft ook de markt een nieuw plekje gekregen.
Daarna een strandje gepikt waar we ook deze vis aantroffen. Geen idee wat het is. Geluncht in onze vaste strandlunchstek Cap'tain. De rosé was er nog steeds als van ouds.

After a few cloudy days the weather gods now seem to have decided in our favor. Allready yesterday the sun appeared. And this morning there was re-appearance. So in concert with the hotel owner we decided to add another night here. And there may be more.

Vieux Boucau has a very nice little church. It has a beautifully painted ceiling (first picture).

Tuesday is market day here. Nothing fancy but it is nice to have look at all the local products such as the superb jambon and the Floc de Gascogne. But even without those it is one of Jeanne's favorite pass times.

Before we had lunch on the beach we met this unfortunate fish. It was a little dead. I have no idea what kind it is/was. We mourned its passing away over a pinchet de rosé.

Fleurance -Vieux Boucau

On June 7 we went to the city of Auch. It has a very lively center (in this time of year) and there are many fine restaurants. We went to La table d'Oste, nothing poche but excellent food. We had a menu consistent of foie gras and magret de canard and it tasted very well. And, as you can see on the picture to the left, also in Auch there is an Irish corner. Paddy is everywhere!
As you can see our friends look very happy. And they are! However, there is a minor something. They like to sell their house in the Gers. And if I had a little money to spare... But as this is not the case I leave this beautiful estate to you. It is a spacious two storey house with a swimming pool and enough land to entertain a couple of cows. The asking price is €399,000. Now, if you compare this price to real estate prices in e.g. Holland, it is surprisingly low. There a similar price doesn't even buy you half this property!
Yesterday we left our friends and drove to the coast, to Vieux Boucau-les-Bains. It is a little north of Biaritz and Bayonne. It is a nice little seaside resort, if it doesn't rain. And that's what it did yesterday! Assuming it gets better, we'll stay here for there nights.

Nederlandse tekst

Eergisteren zijn we naar Auch geweest, zo'n 20 km van Fleurance. In deze tijd van het jaar heeft het een gezellig centrum waar we lekker gegeten hebben in  La table d'Oste. Waarschijnlijk omdat we hier in de streek zitten waar de Armagnac vandaan komt, kregen we daarvan na afloop een glaasje aangeboden. Ik vind het lekkerder/zachter dan vele cognaccen.

Op de bovenste foto staat driekwart van het gezelschap voor een Ierse pub in Auch. Op de onderste foto staat het huis van onze vrienden in Fleurance. Mocht je nog een fraai huis in die streek zoeken, het staat te koop voor de in mijn ogen lage vraagprijs van €399.000. Uit eigen ervaring weet ik dat je voor die prijs in de randstad nauwelijks een 2-onder-1-kap huis koopt op een stukje grond ter grootte van een postzegel. Hier hebben we het over huis van twee verdiepingen met een riant zwembad op een paar duizend m² mooi onderhouden grond. Dus mocht je geïnteresseerd zijn, laat het mij maar weten.

Gisteren zijn we 200 km naar het westen gereden, naar Vieux Boucau-les-Bains aan de Golf van Biskaje. Hoewel behoorlijk toeristisch heeft het ook een eigen dorpscentrum met allerlei voorzieningen. Maar het meest aantrekkelijk voor ons zijn de fraaie stranden waar je uren lang kunt lopen en nauwelijks iemand tegenkomen. Als het weer een beetje meezit blijven we hier drie nachten.

Lodève -Fleurance

De rit van Lodève naar Fleurance is bijna 300 km maar wanneer je de tolwegen vermijdt, dan ben je toch zo'n 5 uur aan het rijden. Niet dat dat erg is, want het doel is om ook nog wat te zien. Daarom koffie gedronken in St. Affrique en voor de lunch gestopt in Albi, de stad van de enorme kathedraal.
Hoewel we hier wel een aantal keren geweest zijn, zal je mij niet horen zeggen dat ik de stad op m'n duimpje ken. We reden dus de stad in richting centre ville en doken daar een ondergrondse parkeergarage in. Dan kom je boven, kijkt om je heen en komt tot de conclusie dat je op deze plek al eerder geweest ben. Wat je noemt een deja vu. En de op en neer gaande fonteinen die het winkelcentrum van Amstelveen opsieren, heb je hier ook (zie foto).
De rit naar Fleurance voert voor een goed deel over de D999, bij mijn weten één van de langste D-wegen van Frankrijk. Hij begint ergens bij Tarascon ten oosten van Nîmes en eindigt bij Albi.
In Fleurance aangekomen is het altijd weer even zoeken waar we precies moeten zijn. Dat is niet zo vreemd als je woont aan een weg waarvan zelfs Google niet weet wat de naam is. Maar via de D953 komen we er toch en wacht ons een gastvrije ontvangst bij T. en A.
Als je dan de andere ochtend uit je raam kijkt, en je kijkt uit op onderstaand panorama, dan zijn we toch wel bofkonten.

Nyons - Lodève

Deze ochtend zijn we met een beetje spijt in het hart uit ons hotel in Nyons vertrokken. De inrichting er van is duidelijk met heel veel zorg gedaan, en tot in het kleinste detail. En dan bedoel ik niet alleen de inrichting. Wordt in sommige hotels te pas en te onpas muzak ten gehore gebracht, hier klonk alleen tijdens het ontbijt mooie klassieke muziek uit een duidelijk goede installatie. Je hoeft er niet van te houden maar het is toch mooi!
Vandaag gaan we in de richting van Fleurance in de Gers. Maar dat zou een rit van ruim 500 km worden en daarvoor zijn we niet met vakantie. Daarom gestopt in Lodève, ongeveer halverwege. De route daar naar toe voerde via Nîmes en Montpellier zodat we in ieder geval kunnen zeggen dat we de Middellandse Zee gezien hebben.
Lodève ligt aan de rivier de  Lergue (zie afb.) en als je van forel houdt, dan moet je vooral je hengel niet vergeten.
Zoals gezegd, morgen door naar Fleurance om te zien hoe onze vrienden het maken.

If you love beautifully styled hotels we can recommend our hotel in Nyons. The name is  Une autre maison. The owners clearly have an eye for detail and the garden is both beautiful and quiet. And did you ever have breakfast with very nice classical music in the background? And speaking of breakfast, this has nothing to do with a run of the mill continental breakfast.
Today we are travelling in the direction of Fleurance in the Gers. But a 500 kms journey would be a bit much for us in a single day. So in the afternoon we made a stop in Lodève situated alongside the river Lergue (see picture). Our trip there went via the old city of Nîmes and always busy Montpellier.
Lodève is a sundrenched city where fortunately the hotel owner is still awake. As the hotel operates one of the few restaurants in the city, the owner can count on our presence tonight.
Tomorrow we hope to see our friends in Fleurance.

Nyons - Vaison-la-Romaine - Nyons

Based on the diary I have with me, we have been here in Nyons prior to 2006. Right now I don't know exactly when but in any case it hasn't changed much. We found a very nice hotel, it is called  une autre maison...  meaning that it is different. E.g. the rooms don't have numbers, they have names. Ours is Les Amis or The Friends. Also the breakfast is excellent. Near the hotel parking lot we saw this beautiful pre-WW2 Citroën. It is called the  Traction Avant or the front wheel drive.

 Since the weekly market here in Nyons is on Thursday, we decided to go to nearby Vaison-la-Romaine. It is the same kind of market but on a different day. If you don't like to hear Dutch during your holiday, don't go there! It seems every Dutch tourist in the Drome is showing up in Vaison. In any case if you like French sausages, olives, savon de Marseilles or linen from the Provence, Vaison is the place to be.

Brédannaz - Nyons

Internet in ons hotel te Brédannaz (even onder Annecy) was niet geweldig. Dus jullie hebben het een paar dagen zonder berichten moeten doen. Afgelopen zaterdag de (klein)kinderen ontmoet. Hun reis nam zo'n 11 uur in beslag in zeer regenachtige omstandigheden. Maar gisteren was het eindelijk zo ver: zon! Met z'n allen een genoegelijke middag in Annecy doorgebracht. Op speciaal verzoek van Toby bij MacDonald gedineerd :-)

Hedenochtend scheen de zon alweer, je zou er bijna aan gaan wennen. Vanuit onze hotelkamer nog een laatste schitterend uitzicht op de Col de la Forclaz (zie afb.) en dan op weg naar de Franse hoofdstad van de olijven, Nyons.
Door een misverstand met de nieuwe TomTom, niet helemaal de gewenste route route door de Alpen gereden maar (te veel) over de autoroute. Dat krijg je er van wanneer je de kaart er niet bij houdt...
In Nyons een alleraardigst hotelletje gevonden, deze keer met een prima functionerend WiFi. Ook een telefoontje gepleegd met onze vrienden in Fleurance. Eerlijk gezegd maakten we ons wat zorgen omdat we al twee avonden op France 2 hebben kunnen zien dat Fleurance onder water stond. De Gers was buiten zijn oevers getreden, en niet zo zuinig ook! Maar T. en A. Maken het gelukkig goed, a.s. donderdag gaan we daar naar toe. En daar verheugen we ons op. Nu naar buiten om een aperitiefje te scoren.
